A Defining Milestone: Establishing LéO Africa Talks and the Griots Conference as Africa's Premier Storytelling Platforms
Welcome back from the festive season and New Year celebrations! We hope you enjoyed a well-deserved break and treasured quality time with friends and family.
We are thrilled to announce a watershed moment in our institutional journey: the successful establishment of LéO Africa Talks: Conversations Worth Having and the Griots Conference as key storytelling platforms for African leadership and transformation. This achievement represents more than a programmatic success—it fulfills a fundamental pillar of our institute's mandate and positions us as custodians of one of Africa's most powerful traditions: the art of storytelling.
For years, we have recognized that Africa's transformation depends not only on developing leaders but on amplifying their voices, preserving their wisdom, and sharing their experiences across generations and borders. With the launch of these platforms, we have now institutionalized this vision, creating sustainable vehicles for the stories that will inspire, challenge, and shape Africa's future.
Why This Milestone Matters
In a world often dominated by narratives about Africa rather than from Africa, establishing dedicated platforms for authentic African storytelling is both urgent and essential. The Griots—the legendary West African historians, poets, and musicians who preserved centuries of wisdom through oral tradition—understood what modern Africa must reclaim: that stories are not mere entertainment but instruments of transformation, education, and collective memory.
LéO Africa Talks and the Griots Conference answer a critical question: How do we ensure that the profound lessons being learned by Africa's changemakers today don't remain isolated experiences but become shared wisdom that accelerates progress across the continent? These platforms provide the answer—they are the infrastructure through which knowledge flows, connections form, and movements begin.
A Year of Historic Achievement
2025 marked the year we brought this vision to life. After careful planning and preparation, we launched both platforms with remarkable success:
The Inaugural Griots Conference 2025 brought together our first cohort of Griots Fellows—extraordinary individuals from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Egypt. Over an unforgettable day, these diverse voices crafted inspiring narratives, shared deeply personal experiences, and built their capacity to create greater influence by projecting their stories with power and authenticity.
LéO Africa Talks emerged as our digital storytelling platform, designed to carry these conversations beyond conference halls and into communities across the continent and diaspora. Through this platform, we are fulfilling our commitment to democratize access to the wisdom of Africa's leaders and changemakers.
The success of these launches was complemented by other significant achievements throughout the year. We strengthened our fellowship community through reunion seminars for both the Huduma and Young & Emerging Leaders Project communities, fostering deeper connections and shared commitments. Our partnership with UNDP Uganda on a breakfast dialogue examining Youth Innovation and AI demonstrated our ability to convene critical conversations at the intersection of leadership and emerging opportunities.
Diverse Voices, Unified by Wisdom
What makes the Griots Conference truly transformative is the extraordinary range of perspectives it brings together. The 2025 Kampala Griots fellowship included:
- Doctors saving lives in underserved communities
- Engineers who drill oil wells and bake cakes with equal passion
- Bankers reimagining financial inclusion for marginalized populations
- Nutritionists battling malnutrition on the frontlines
- Computer scientists building innovative, community-oriented technologies
- Cardiologists championing healthcare reforms centered on wellness
- Artists exploring the power of creative expression as social commentary
- Social justice activists building equitable societies through advocacy and action
Despite their different disciplines, these storytellers share a common thread: each has navigated significant challenges, learned invaluable lessons, and emerged with wisdom that can illuminate the path for others. Their stories are not merely personal triumphs but roadmaps for transformation—proof that individual experiences, when shared authentically, become collective resources for progress.
Sharing the Stories: January Spotlight
Throughout January, we will publish all talks from the inaugural Griots Conference, spotlighting five fellows across our platforms. This means you will engage with powerful narratives offering unique insights into leadership, innovation, resilience, and community transformation across Africa. Each story represents not just one person's journey but a contribution to our continent's living archive of wisdom.
You can visit our YouTube Channel to explore these stories and more from the Institute.
Expanding Our Impact in 2026
Having successfully established these platforms, we are now positioned to scale their impact. In 2026, we will host Griots Conference editions in Kampala, Kigali, and Nairobi, creating even more opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas and deeper regional collaboration.
We aim to cast our net wider, inviting storytellers from across the continent to contribute their voices to this growing movement.
This expansion reflects our understanding that storytelling platforms must be dynamic, accessible, and responsive to Africa's diverse contexts. By establishing these conferences in three of East Africa's most vibrant cities, we are building the infrastructure for sustained, continent-wide dialogue.
Our Commitment Moving Forward
The establishment of LéO Africa Talks and the Griots Conference marks the fulfillment of a core institutional pillar, but it also marks a beginning. We are committed to:
- Curating excellence: Maintaining the highest standards for the stories we amplify
- Ensuring accessibility: Making these narratives available across platforms and formats
- Fostering continuity: Building year-round engagement, not just annual events
- Measuring impact: Tracking how these stories translate into action and transformation
- Expanding reach: Bringing voices from every corner of the continent into conversation

Through the power of storytelling—Africa's oldest and most enduring tradition—we are building the future we envision. This is not just programming; this is the preservation and projection of Africa's wisdom for generations to come.
