Our long-time deputy director Kwezi Tabaro is the recipient of the prestigious Hubert Humphrey Fellowship 2024, marking a significant recognition of his outstanding contribution to shaping leadership development programmes at the LéO Africa Institute.

He is the sole candidate selected from Uganda this year and will embark on a ten-month academic sabbatical at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota starting this August.

During his fellowship year, Kwezi will deepen his expertise in public administration, policy formulation, and strategic management, among other areas.

Since joining the Institute in 2015, Kwezi has played a pivotal role in driving LéO Africa Institute’s innovative leadership programs across Uganda and the wider East African region. His influence extends beyond the Institute, as he has become a recognized voice on national and regional issues through his media engagements.

Founder and Senior Director of the Institute, Awel Uwihanganye, expressed pride in Kwezi’s selection, emphasizing its alignment with the Institute’s mission to nurture values-based leadership. He also highlighted the importance of Kwezi’s future leadership in the public policy arena upon his return.

“Kwezi’s selection for the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship is a testament to his unwavering commitment to values-based leadership and a strong endorsement of our efforts over the years to build a new generation of African leaders.”

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is a prestigious initiative that brings accomplished mid-career professionals with exceptional leadership potential to the United States for a year of graduate-level non-degree academic coursework and professional development activities. With a focus on fostering lasting connections between American professionals and their international counterparts, the ten-month program combines academic learning with relevant professional internships.
