Why This Conversation Matters
The Annual Leaders Gathering's theme—"Building Together for Impact: Inspiring Excellence Through Transformational Leadership"—finds its most concrete expression in the relationship between KAS and LéO Africa Institute. KAS has been LéO Africa's longest-standing partner, maintaining support through multiple programs and fellowships that shape young African leaders. This conversation will examine what makes such partnerships work and why they matter.
The Participants
The composition of this discussion reflects the depth required to examine partnership and leadership development seriously.
Charles Mudiwa brings three decades of banking experience across Eastern and Southern Africa. As CEO and Managing Director of dfcu Bank Uganda, he has built a reputation as a transformational leader and turnaround expert. His work as an Executive Coach positions him to speak to how leaders develop executive presence and drive organizational change. His keynote will set the context for understanding leadership at the institutional level.
Anna Reismann leads KAS operations in Uganda and South Sudan, bringing extensive international development experience. Her prior roles—Policy Advisor for Central America, the Andean countries, Mexico and Cuba; Deputy Director for Ukraine; and Project Manager for Multinational Development Policy Dialogue—demonstrate expertise in building strategic partnerships across diverse contexts. Her sustained commitment to the LéO Africa Institute reflects KAS's approach to long-term investment in leadership development rather than a transactional engagement.
Awel Uwihanganye co-founded LéO Africa Institute and currently serves as its Programme Lead while also serving as Chief Advancement Officer at Makerere University. His track record includes co-founding CEED Concordia, leading the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and serving on the boards of Global Health Corps and the African Leadership Initiative. As an Aspen Fellow and architect of the Concordia Africa Initiative, he understands both the operational challenges of building leadership institutions and the strategic requirements of sustaining them through partnerships.
The Conversation Structure
Uwihanganye will guide the discussion through four interconnected themes:
Partnership as Strategy: The conversation will open with Reismann reflecting on why KAS has maintained its commitment to LéO Africa Institute longer than any other partner. This section will explore what drives sustained institutional support and how KAS evaluates its role in African youth leadership development.
Lessons from Long-Term Collaboration: Reismann and Mudiwa will discuss specific programs, fellowships, and initiatives that demonstrate sustained impact. The focus will be on what makes partnerships truly effective over time—the principles, practices, and commitments that separate transformational relationships from one-off initiatives.
Building Leadership Ecosystems: This segment addresses how consistent institutional support, mentorship, and strategic partnership create environments where ethical, values-driven leaders can develop. The discussion will examine the role of intergenerational collaboration and how partnerships like KAS and LéO Africa Institute contribute to systemic change rather than individual success stories.
Practical Takeaways: The session will close with advice for young leaders and fellows on leveraging partnerships for long-term impact. Reismann and Mudiwa will outline key principles for building and sustaining collaborative relationships that drive excellence.
Connecting to the Conference Theme
This conversation operationalizes the conference theme by demonstrating what "building together" actually requires. Transformational leadership, as both Mudiwa's career and LéO Africa Institute's work show, does not emerge in isolation. It requires institutional support, strategic partnerships, and sustained commitment across sectors.
The KAS-LéO Africa relationship illustrates how excellence in partnership—strategic alignment, consistency, and shared values—translates vision into action. By examining this partnership, participants will gain insight into how collaborative support cultivates the leadership ecosystems necessary for lasting impact.
The session promises practical understanding of why transformational leadership requires partnerships, how values-driven collaboration fosters the next generation of African leaders, and what sustained commitment looks like in practice. For the fellows, leaders, and practitioners attending the Annual Leaders Gathering, this conversation offers both validation of the conference theme and a roadmap for implementing it.
